AUGUST 1988

Cover Story: Four-plus years after he first captured the WWF World title, and “Hulkamania” kicked into high gear, Hulk Hogan passed the torch to his good buddy—who was soon to be his arch-enemy—Randy Savage. “Macho Madness! The Torch Is Passed” was the headline, and the story examined just what went down in the one-night tournament for the vacant WWF championship that an exhausted Savage won (with help from Elizabeth and Hogan) by beating Ted DiBiase in the finals. “Macho Madness is running wild!” the story concluded. No one knew at the time that Hogan would be taking his torch back and passing it … and taking it back and passing it again at least a handful of times over the next 15 years.
